Creating Your Sanctuary

"It is only in the stillness and quiet that we can access our true desires, dreams, and fears, and then expand our personal boundaries, and encompass what we wish to create for ourselves."

In our busy world of life, it is all too easy for us to not take the time needed to retreat into our selves.  If your household is anything like mine, there is a rare chance of having the space and time for quiet, peace, and solitude.  But it is so important for all of us to find that sanctuary, a private escape where we can go within to restore and recharge.   It is in that space that we can hear what is most important.  Whether it is in the whispers of our heart, the stirrings of our soul, or a sense of feeling in our gut, it is only in the stillness and quiet that we can access our true desires, dreams, and fears, and then expand our personal boundaries, and encompass what we wish to create for ourselves.

I have always dreamt of having a room or studio of my own.  A dear friend even gave me a birthday gift of a diorama room – a lovely space that I could imagine crossing my arms and blinking into, as if I were “I dream of Jeanie”.  I imagine lounging in this divine and peace filled room.  I desperately need a space where I can just “be”.  Where I can practice my yoga, have space to dance and move to my soul’s desire, and find that peace within me.  But I don’t have that room and so I find myself striving to create it somewhere amidst the chaos of my life.   I stay up extraordinarily late at night to find quiet time.  I retreat to the bath – light candles, pour in bath salts, turn on soothing music, and then just soak all the stress out for sometimes hours. My daughter gave me an “Astral Journey Candle” for my birthday.  There are specific instructions for lighting it and it requires undisturbed meditation.  I keep looking at it and thinking, I have to find a sanctuary.  I have to set up an alter to myself, in praise of my soul, in awe of me.  And so I am now thinking about it and really want to do just that.  It starts with a quiet place that is not traveled by others in my household.  I have a dressing area that is actually quite perfect.  There is space enough for a nice pillowy cushion that I could sit on and meditate. There is a dressing table where I could set up the things that are important and that have meaning to me. It is a place where I could light that candle and when everyone in my house is out or sleeping, put on music and soak up the positive radiating energy.   I need that peace and quiet, that stillness, and the space and place to find my personal and soulful sanctuary.  Just to be able to sit in the quiet and stillness… just to have that space and time to think, and to hear the voice of my heart and soul.

Life and the world are stressful, pulling me in many directions, challenging me on every level.  It is crucial to center and refresh myself each day.  It is critical for us all to be able to retreat and tap into that sanctuary within ourselves. “Within you is a stillness, and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time” - Herman Hesse, but you have to create the space in order to get there.
