Don't Miss This Moment

Each moment missed is a moment unlived. – Jon Kabat Zinn

Life is happening. Your life is happening. Right now in this very moment your life is in process. Moments are coming and going, never to return again. No matter what you’re doing or not doing or what you’re saying or not saying, this moment matters as much as any other moment you’ve lived.

This moment is your life. If you miss it, you miss your life.

When you show up in this moment and allow yourself to experience whatever is happening, you tap into your full spectrum of senses and you shift from doing  to being, from thinking to experiencing.

Wake up in this moment and you feel fully alive.

Wake up from the need to plan and produce and show up right now in the center of this moment. Your life will become a colorful, spectacular palette of potential or what I call a high-definition experience.

This past week I lived many high-definition moments of aliveness. Some were subtle such as the peace that came over me upon waking, knowing both of my daughters were home on break from school, or the tug at my heart when walking into my house knowing my best friend and little dog Joey who passed away last week would never again be there to greet me. I also experienced moments of exhilaration when 1,000 copies of my book, On the Verge, were delivered to my garage, or when signing my book for a friend for the first time.

Life is full of moments not to be missed. And by the way, every moment counts.

The extraordinary life-shifting moments of birth and death are important but not more so than the more ordinary gentle and profoundly humbling moments.

Every moment counts. Every single one of them.

Being fully alive is to wake up just in time to experience seemingly ordinary moments of life such as catching the sweet smell of the hyacinths I placed in the mudroom in honor of Joey or pausing to receive the magnificent full moon staring at me through my bedroom window.

This moment is your life — don’t miss it.

Can you give yourself permission to sit in this moment, right here and now? Can you allow yourself the opportunity to pause and experience your life as it is in this very moment, reading these words, while sitting or standing, inside or outside, in the morning or evening?

Take a moment and look around you. Notice what you see. Take a deep breath in and notice what you smell. Notice the temperature of the air on your skin, the taste in your mouth, and the sounds that are coming and going.

Take a moment and look within.

What are you thinking in this exact moment? Don’t judge, just notice what is holding your attention. Get curious about your life right here and now. Name exactly what you are experiencing.

Notice sounds, smells, tastes, sensations, sights, and thoughts. Notice everything. Notice more and you won’t miss your life.

Notice more and you will feel fully alive.
